Riddell SpeedFlex Helmet Sizing & Fitting Guide

Finding the right helmet size is crucial for both comfort and safety on the field. Use this detailed guide to measure, select, and fit your SpeedFlex helmet properly.

Size Chart

Size Hat Size Head Circumference (inches) Head Circumference (cm)
S up to 6 1/2 up to 20 3/8” up to 52 cm
M 6 1/2 – 7 20 3/8” – 22” 52 – 56 cm
L 7 – 7 1/2 22” – 23 1/2” 56 – 60 cm
XL 7 1/2 and up 23 1/2” and up 60 cm and up

How to Measure Your Head

  1. Use a flexible cloth measuring tape.
Wrap the tape around your head, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) above your eyebrows and ears—where the helmet will sit.

  2. Read the measurement in centimeters or inches.
Compare your measurement to the chart above to determine your correct size.
If your measurement falls between sizes, start with the smaller size for a snug fit.

Visual Sizing Guide

Wrap the tape 1” above the eyebrows as shown in the image.

Proper Helmet Fit

  • The helmet should sit approximately 1” (2.5 cm) above the eyebrows.

  • All pads (crown, side, back, and face frame) should make contact with your head, but not cause discomfort.

  • With the helmet on, move it side to side and up and down. Your forehead skin should move with the front pad—this means the fit is snug enough.

  • The helmet should not shift or wobble when you shake your head.

Adjusting the Fit

  • Crown Pad: Inflate using the Riddell hand pump for a higher fit or deflate for a lower fit.

  • Back/Side Liner: Inflate for a snug fit, especially if the helmet feels loose front-to-back or side-to-side.

  • Face Frame Pads: Inflate until they sit firmly against your face.

  • Occipital Lock: Inflate for a secure fit at the base of your skull.

Quick Fit Checklist

  • Helmet sits 1” above eyebrows
  • All pads contact your head
  • Chinstrap is tight and centered
  • No excessive movement when shaking head
  • No uncomfortable pressure points

Example of Correct Fit

Helmet should be level and cover the forehead, as shown.
